The Building is not the Church!

The Apostle Paul explained that the believers make up the church, not the building where they meet (1Corinthians 3:16-17; Ephesians 4:3).  For that reason, we like to emphasize that Hope Bible Church MEETS AT 224 Oak Street in Columbus Junction, IA.

Where We've Been (Our History)...

In October, 1941, dissatisfied with the worldly direction many churches were taking, eight people came together under the leadership of Rev. J.L. Pace, forming the Independent Bible Church.  During the next seven years, the church grew steadily, formally joining fellowship with the Independent Fundamental Churches of America (currently called IFCA, International) in April 1943.  On November 2, 1948, the church purchased the building where we currently meet.  During the next few years, improvements were made to the building, and on June 19, 1955, it was formally dedicated to the Lord's service.

Since then, the church has maintained a consistent doctrinal position, focusing on the fundamentals of the Christian faith, striving to evangelize our community, and make disciples of our members and regular attenders.  An emphasis on world missions has also been a large part of the church's focus, supporting numerous missionaries through prayer and financial donations.  In addition, some have "gone out" as missionaries, including a former pastor, the son of a former pastor, and a female church member.

In January, 1999, the church changed its name from Independent Bible Church to Hope Bible Church, believing that the Bible has the only real hope for a world enslaved by sin.  This name change also signifies that although we intend to remain independent from ecclesiastical control, we do not desire to be isolated from the people around us.  For truly, our hope is in the Lord, and we desire to share HIM with others.

Where We're Going...

We have a vision for reaching our community with the Gospel (Acts 1:8) and for making disciples of our people (Matthew 28:19-20).  While some of the following goals are generic to all Bible-believing churches, some are specific to our local church.  As God enables us, Hope Bible Church desires to:

1. Study the Bible diligently (2Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17)

2. Memorize and meditate on Scripture (Psalm 119:11; Philippians 4:8)

3. Develop biblical prayer lives (John 14:13-14; 1John 5:14-15)

4. Fellowship regularly with true believers (Hebrews 10:24-25)

5. Use our Spiritual gifts to serve each other (Ephesians 4:11-16; 1Peter 4:10)

6. Share our faith with others (2Corinthians 5:18-20; 1Peter 3:15)
