Spiritual Disciplines

How Do I Live Successfully?

by Pastor Jim Braden

Many ask this question because they think they have failed in previous situations.  Others have been frustrated by their own inconsistent living as believers.  Whatever your situation, the Lord desires to make you mature, thereby enabling you to be led by the Spirit in every aspect of living.  The process is simple, but it takes work.  Are you ready to "roll up your sleeves" and start the process?  We call it "Spiritual Discipline"  and it starts with a desire to know and love God first (Matthew 22:37-38).

In 1975, Erwin Lutzer wrote a book entited Failure: the Back Door to Success, and in it, he made a startling observation: God is seeking worshipers.  He is looking for men and women who know Him.  Lutzer writes:

"Obviously, the things we do for God are secondary.  Above all else, God is looking for people who long for communication with Him."

"People who long for communication with Him..."  It sounds simple, doesn't it?  But in reality, that is the essence of success, for if we will learn to communicate with God, we will fulfill Galatians 5:16, which says...

"Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

Over the years, we have identified six areas of spiritual discipline which enable us to "walk in the Spirit."  We have broken them down into three "internal" and three "external" disciplines.  The three internal disciplines enable us to communicate with God better.  The three external disciplines enable us to serve our communities better.
