Ministry Philosophy
   Our Ministry Philosophy
Hope Bible Church ministers under the philosophy that the Bible is the inspired Word of God (2Tim 3:16-17), and it provides everything a Christian needs for life and godliness (2Pet 1:3-4).  With that in mind, the church's constitution and the policies of the church determine those practices we allow and those organizations with whom we affiliate (2Cor 6:14-18).  In addition, interpreting the Bible in a literal, historical, and grammatical method determines the goals and methods we use in our various ministries.  Our doctrinal statement is based on this method of biblical interpretation.
Hope Bible Church is a member of IFCA International, a fellowship of autonomous churches with the same doctrinal positions on the major (fundamental) doctrines of the Bible.  As such, our individual church doctrinal statement is in agreement with that of IFCA, International, but Hope Bible Church may not have the same philosophy about minor issues as other IFCA churches.
In this section of our website, we present our doctrinal statement as well as church ministry philosophy and policies.  To see details about specific areas of ministry, click on the titles below.

Worship Philosophy

The word "worship" has been redefined, misused, and abused during the past few decades.  We do not believe it refers only to a time of singing, nor do we limit it to a special service held on Sunday mornings.  We believe that worship takes place throughout the week, not just on Sunday, and true worship glorifies God, not mankind.
Our worship philosophy is very simple, coming from John 4:24, which says: "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."  The purpose of worship is to focus on the infinite value of Almighty God, not those things which make us "feel good."  The method of corporate worship that we practice includes a number of elements, each of which are based on biblical principles.  Those elements include: adoration, praise, thanksgiving, prayer, music, preaching, teaching, edification of the Body, and obedience to His Word.  For more details, please visit the Worship Philosophy page.

The early church met daily to worship God, to encourage each other, and to challenge one another to godly living (Acts 2:41-47).  As a result, the Church grew significantly in the weeks following the Day of Pentecost.  Hope Bible Church desires to experience the same thing, recognizing that our unity depends on our doctrine (Ephesians 4:1-6).

Biblical Counseling
In the late 19th century, people became fascinated by the things "science" was accomplishing.  The invention of such things as the railroad, the telegraph, the telephone, medicines, textiles, and a host of other things led the public to think that science had answers that the Bible did not.  That philosophy was called "Modernism" and it resulted in a loss of respect for the Church and Christian theology.
A prime example is the personality theory presented by a man named Sigmund Freud, who called himself "a completely godless Jew."  Freud proposed secular theories of human behavior, and rejected biblical principles as being "an illusion."  Freud's medical theories opened the world of "psychiatry"  and because scientific discoveries were happening rapidly, many accepted his ideas without question.
From those humanistic beginnings, Freud's followers developed secular psychology  in the 20th century, and even some Christians have mixed psychology with the Bible.  Those "integrationist counselors" have done more damage to the thinking of believers than a direct assault by the forces of hell.
We believe the Bible has the answers to all of life's problems and there is no need to mix humanism with biblical principles.  We counsel people FROM THE BIBLE and have seen God use His Word to change hundreds.

Warning! Darwinism is Hazardous to Your Spiritual Health!

In 1832, Charles Darwin accompanied the crew of the HMS Beagle on a five-year world cruise.  He had been raised as a Unitarian, which is a religion without absolutes, rejecting most biblical principles that regard sin, man’s sinful nature, and our single, righteous God.  Having read the writings of various naturalists who were also non-believers, he had already concluded that the Bible did not contain the truth on subjects like creation.

He was the fifth of six children of a wealthy society doctor and financier, Robert Darwin, who referred to himself as a “free thinker.”  With such a background, it is no wonder Darwin took a non-traditional approach to life.  At the age of sixteen, he was enrolled in the University of Edinburgh, but failed to apply himself, dropping out and studying taxidermy instead.  He developed an opinion of the difference between Africans and Europeans, which later was mixed with theories proposed by JB Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (his grandfather).

The failure to pursue medical studies annoyed his father, who then enrolled him in a course at Christ’s College, Cambridge, so he could earn a living as a clergyman in the Anglican tradition.  Darwin became engrossed in the popular craze for beetle collecting and became a close friend and follower of botany professor John Stevens Henslow.  His associations gave him the idea that "scientific work" was to be regarded as religious activity.

This fact itself is the heart of Darwinism and all its errors.  Because he viewed man’s “discoveries” as equal with or superior to God’s revelation, the resulting movement has drawn millions away from a dependence on God’s Word for learning the Truth.  In this section, we will see how this foundational opinion of Darwin led him (and all who follow him) to faith in man’s abilities, and doubting God’s inspiration of Scripture.  Even if his theories were true (which they are not) the seed sown by his attitude toward Scripture is the same seed sown by the Devil, when he asked Eve: “Yea, hath God said…?”

At Cambridge, Darwin studied a variety of authors who seemed to advocate a form of “theistic evolution” (God acting through laws of nature) rather than actual creation.  He was taught that man can “discover” truth through inductive reasoning (observation leading to conclusions)—implying that God’s revelation is insufficient.  At the time of his college graduation, one of his professors recommended him as a suitable (although unfinished) naturalist for the unpaid position of gentleman’s companion to the captain of HMS Beagle.  Thus, he went aboard as the captain’s valet—not as an authority on botany or zoology.

The trip was intended to last two years, and its mission was to map the coastline of South America.  In reality, the voyage lasted almost five years, and Darwin spent most of that time on land investigating geology and making natural history collections.

The notes of his observations and theoretical speculations showed him to be (at best) a novice, collecting specimens for expert appraisal.  On their first stop ashore (a Portuguese island off the western coast of Africa) Darwin found seashells high up in some volcanic rock cliffs.  His uniformitarian training biased him to conclude the land was ages old, taking Charles Lyell’s theories as fact.  Failing to consider any other explanation, his mind was made up even before they crossed the Atlantic.

In Patagonia (the southernmost tip of South America) he found fossils of huge extinct mammals in cliffs beside modern seashells, indicating recent extinction with no signs of change in climate or catastrophe.  But this “discovery” did little to change his mind about creation or the age of the earth.  Recent discoveries of the same fossils (the giant sloth) in North America (near Seattle) have shown that Darwin’s theories were wrong about it. (Imagine that!)

This is one example of how a mind that is already made up is very hard to change, even when the Light of Scripture is revealed to that mind.  Darwinists can honestly say: “Don’t confuse me with facts—my mind is already made up.”

During Darwin’s trip in the Beagle, he experimented with collecting specimens for study by the “experts” of the day.  I say “experimented” because remember: he was not a fully trained naturalist.  He was an amateur at best.  A lot of people forget this fact: his training was incomplete, and what he had studied focused on a method of speculation, rather than a truly scientific method of observation and repetition!  The method he employed was a form of “circular reasoning.”  An example is as follows:

1. He accepted the geological age of rock layers as fact, even though there was no real evidence to claim that a particular layer had a specific age.  In addition, there is no consistent dating method available—not even today!

2. He assumed that anything found in a particular rock layer was the same age as the rock layer.  This is another terrible method, because there is no way to test its age, and many possible explanations exist when speculating about the age of the fossils.

3. He drew conclusions based on his assumptions, rather than testing his hypothesis and waiting to observe repetitions of his testing.  This is NOT true science.  In fact, Darwin’s own writings expose his prejudice.

On page 403 of his infamous book Origin of Species, Darwin wrote: ‘What can be more curious, than that the hand of a man, formed for grasping, that of a mole for digging, the leg of the horse, the paddle of the porpoise, and the wing of the bat, should all be constructed on the same pattern, and should include similar bones, in the same relative positions?’  He concluded that this similarity was (as he quoted Professor Flower) ‘powerfully suggestive of true relationship, of inheritance from a common ancestor.’

The idea that a fundamental similarity in structures is due to common descent is called homology.  But this idea is not in the slightest a proof of evolution.  It is simply an assumption by those who reject creation.  In fact, Darwin revealed this was his position when he said “some believe that it has pleased the Creator to construct all the animals and plants in each great class on a uniform plan, but this is not a scientific explanation.”  He was therefore ruling out the possibility of creation based on a common plan by implying it was not scientific, so he wouldn’t believe it whether it was true or not.

But Darwin had developed a life pattern which he was prone to repeat as an adult.  According to those who knew Darwin personally, he would "invent deliberate falsehoods" in order to get attention.  He would do anything at school “for the pure pleasure of exciting attention and surprise,” and his cultivated “lies…gave him pleasure, like a tragedy.”  He told tall tales about natural history, reported strange birds, and boasted of being able to change the color of flowers.  Once he invented an elaborate story designed to show how fond he was of telling the truth.  It was a boy’s way of manipulating the world.

So Darwin kept his journal, speculated on the information he found, and finished his journey in 1837.  For years, he kept his conclusions to himself, fearing a backlash from Christians if he published them.  But as time passed, others began attempting to bring the pieces together into a general, secular theory concerning origins.  In the mid 1850’s a man named Alfred Russel Wallace was attempting to print a theory about the origin of the world.  But Darwin wanted the spotlight; he wanted approval; he wanted recognition by his peers and this was paramount in his mind.  So in 1859, he went rapidly into print once the Wallace threat became known to him.

Thus, was born a tall tale—taller than anything man had previously conceived.  Darwin’s book, entitled:  On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, set the stage for science and technology to displace the Bible as the supreme authority in human thinking.  The results of publishing that book have been tragic—it is hard to imagine anything man could do that would have such far-reaching, damaging results.  Secular psychology, psychotherapy, humanism, and the Nazi holocaust are all direct results of Darwin’s musings.

Millions have turned their backs on the Word of God.  Even some professing Christians have been tainted by it.  The reason is, if one can be made to doubt the first eleven chapters of Genesis (creation, the Flood, and the origin of languages) there is little reason for him to believe the rest of the Bible.  This strategy of the Devil has been very effective.  Thus, the time for the Church to stand up and fight back is long overdue.

Warning! Warning! Warning!
Darwinism is a Spiritual Cancer, eating away at the heart of man...

The following quote is from the
Darwin Day Celebration website:

“The Darwin Day Celebration (DDC) promotes public education about science and encourages the celebration of Science and Humanity throughout the global community.  DDC is administered by the Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS).

Darwin Day is a global celebration of science and reason held on or around Feb. 12, the birthday anniversary of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin.  This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth...”

What is wrong with this picture?  Humanism is the problem.  Humanism (Modern Humanism, Naturalistic Humanism, Scientific Humanism, Ethical Humanism and Democratic Humanism) is defined by one of its leading proponents, Corliss Lamont, as "a naturalistic philosophy that rejects all supernaturalism and relies primarily upon reason and science, democracy and human compassion."  Modern Humanism has a dual origin, both secular and religious, and these constitute its sub-categories.

Humanism, therefore, rejects the Bible and God, declaring that Mankind is in the place of God; therefore, humanists believe man can “discover” truth without any need for a God to reveal it to him.  Darwinism (also called evolutionary theory) is the offspring of ancient humanism and the parent of modern humanism, for  humanism was first exhibited in Genesis 11:4, when Nimrod brought all humanity together to make a name for themselves.  God rejected their efforts then, and has told us to reject them now:

1John 4:1-6 is the central passage for our study in this subject.  It shows why a Biblical Catechism is very important in our modern society.  The Apostle John quoted Jesus as having said: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  (John 8:32)  So let’s look at 1Jn 4:1-6 in its entirety…

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.  They are of the world.  Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.  We are of God.  He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us.  By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

There you have it.  Darwinism is a philosophy that is NOT true science, but claims to be.  It rejects God, His Bible, and His Savior.  It embodies the attitude, philosophy and thinking of the Antichrist.  Christians who believe the Bible will reject Darwinism, humanism, and all associated theories and philosophies.
